Fall is when I start craving the simple stuff. Cooler afternoons, something warm in the kitchen, and an excuse to get everyone away from their screens for a little while.
These are the kinds of activities I like most because they don’t require a packed schedule or a cart full of supplies. They’re easy, cozy, and actually doable on a regular weekend.
Here are five fall activities I’d happily bring back every year.
1. Pick Out Pumpkins Together

Going to a pumpkin patch is such a simple outing, but that’s part of why I love it. Give everyone permission to wander around and find the pumpkin that looks just right to them.
And don’t worry about finding the prettiest one. The lopsided, bumpy pumpkins somehow always end up being the favorites at our house.
2. Bake Something with Apples

If we come home with a bag of apples, at least a few are going straight into something warm.
Apple muffins, a simple crisp, or baked apples with cinnamon are all easy enough for kids to help with. Let them measure, stir, and sneak an apple slice or two while you work.
3. Take a Walk and Collect Fall Treasures

Grab a basket and head outside without making the walk complicated. Look for colorful leaves, acorns, pinecones, interesting sticks, and anything else that catches the kids’ attention.
I’ve learned not to rush this kind of walk. Kids can spend ten minutes examining one leaf, and sometimes that ends up being the whole point.
Bring your finds home and use the prettiest pieces for a craft or simply arrange them in a bowl on the table.
4. Have Hot Chocolate Outside

Hot chocolate tastes better when your hands are cold. Make a few mugs, pile on the marshmallows, and take them outside instead of drinking them at the kitchen table.
Sit on the porch, wrap everyone in blankets, or bring the mugs along for a backyard picnic. It doesn’t need to be a special event.
Just make sure younger kids get cocoa that has cooled enough to drink safely.
5. Make a Big Pile of Leaves

This might be the easiest activity on the list.
Rake a giant pile of dry leaves somewhere safe, check carefully for sticks or rocks, and let the kids have at it. There’s something about jumping into leaves that never seems to get old.
And yes, you’ll probably have to rake them twice. I consider that part of the deal.
The nice thing about fall is that family time doesn’t have to be elaborate. Sometimes apples on the counter, leaves in the yard, and a warm drink are more than enough.
Pick whichever idea sounds good today and keep the rest for another weekend.
